WHO WANT'S TO BE A MILLIONAIRE *SPACE*
LEARNING OBJECTIVE: For students to reflect on what they have learnt through observation of regular cycles that occur in space, and to see how well they understand what they have learnt. Also to work on they speaking, listening, reading and performance skills as this activity integrates science with drama and english.
Expected areas of learning: Students will be practicing skills from three different curriculum areas in this activity, and those are science, drama and english. This is an effective teaching method of integrating different subjects so they students are constantly reflecting on many things they have learnt from many different areas of learning.
Details of the task: At the beginning of the lesson the teacher must select 10 students to read the questions and 10 students to answer questions. The students that are answering the questions should be separated into two teams so they can compete against each other. To motivate the students the teacher could adopt extrinsic motivation by offering an award for the team who answers the most questions correctly. This is also considered a drama activity as the students take on rolse of the presenter and contestant like on the real show, who wants to be a millionaire. You can set up a table at the front of the room where the contestant and presenter can sit and perform as if they were really on the show. This will be a student lead lesson where the teacher is merely there for supervision the students lead their own learning. You can even have a printout of the questions at the end and the students could do it as a quiz to see who was paying attention to the answers and listening to the other contestants and presenters. This will also help students practice their reading skills as they will have to read the questions to the other students and make sure they understand. Students all also begin to become familiar with the correct spelling of theses space terms as they will be constantly revising them throughout the activity and the quiz at the end.
Assessment:
The teacher can use this lesson as a gage to assess how much the students have retained from this area of study. If the students are confident in what they have learnt and retained they will volunteer early to be questioned by other students. The quiz at the end will also provide information for the teacher to highlight which students have struggled or been disengaged from the topic. The teacher can also see if the student takes on the role as presenter and uses their drama skills to be portrayed as a games show host.
